Tile Repair & Re-grouting FAQ

Can you replace a single cracked tile?expand_more

Yes, as long as a matching replacement tile is available. We carefully remove the cracked tile without damaging the surrounding ones, clean out the old adhesive, set the new tile, and grout to match. The hardest part is often finding an exact tile match — if you have leftover tiles from the original installation, that is ideal.

How do I know if my grout needs to be replaced?expand_more

Crumbling, cracking, discolored, or missing grout all indicate it is time. In bathrooms and showers, grout that has darkened despite cleaning often has mold penetrating below the surface. If you can scrape grout out with your fingernail, it has deteriorated and is no longer sealing the joints.

What is the difference between re-grouting and recaulking?expand_more

Grout fills the joints between tiles on flat surfaces. Caulk is used at change-of-plane joints — where the wall meets the floor, where two walls meet in a corner, or where tile meets a tub or shower pan. Using grout in caulk locations (or vice versa) causes cracking and water intrusion.

Can you match my existing grout color?expand_more

We can get very close using color-matched grout from major manufacturers like Mapei and Polyblend. Keep in mind that new grout will look different from old, discolored grout even if it is the same product. For the most uniform look, re-grouting the entire area is the best approach.

How long does re-grouting take?expand_more

A standard bathtub surround takes two to four hours — that includes grinding out the old grout, cleaning the joints, applying new grout, and cleaning the haze. The grout needs 24 hours to cure before the shower is used.

Is loose tile a sign of a bigger problem?expand_more

It can be. A single loose tile may just have a bond failure. But multiple loose tiles in a shower or bathroom floor often indicate moisture behind or beneath the tile that has compromised the substrate. We assess the area to determine whether it is a spot repair or a larger issue.

How We Handle Tile Repair & Re-grouting

Every job follows a consistent process to ensure quality results.

1

Assessment & Material Matching

We inspect the damaged area, check for underlying moisture or substrate damage, and source matching tile and grout. We verify the replacement materials before starting any removal work.

2

Tile Removal (if needed)

Cracked or loose tiles are carefully removed using an oscillating tool and chisel to avoid damaging adjacent tiles. Old adhesive is scraped from the substrate, and the surface is cleaned and leveled.

3

Grout Removal & Preparation

Old grout is removed from the joints using a grout saw or oscillating tool. Joints are cleaned of all dust and debris, and we check the tile edges for chips that need to be addressed before new grout goes in.

4

Tile Setting & Grouting

Replacement tiles are set with thin-set mortar and spaced correctly. Once set, new grout is worked into all joints, packed firmly, and the excess is cleaned with a damp sponge before it hazes over.

5

Sealing & Caulk Lines

After the grout cures, we apply grout sealer to protect against moisture and staining. Change-of-plane joints (tub-to-tile, floor-to-wall) are caulked with color-matched silicone caulk for a water-tight finish.

What Does Tile Repair & Re-grouting Cost?

Cost depends on the area being re-grouted, the number of tiles being replaced, and the condition of the substrate. Simple re-grouting of a bathtub surround is on the lower end. Projects that involve tile replacement, substrate repair, or mold remediation cost more.
